The Artist as Philantropist

Shepeard Fairey's The Future is Unwritten, 2011 is the
first in the "Artist as Activist"
In the after math of the devastation left by Hurricane Katrina, in August 2005 Representatives of the New York based Mitchell Foundation reached out the arts community in a huge effort to help. After talking with individual artists and arts-organization leaders the
foundations executive director said "we realized that returning to the studio and finding a way to continue work following the flood was a major challenge for New Orleans artists.

In September 2005 The foundation mad its first emergency grants to artists since then more than 3 million dollars in grants have gone out to artists in need all over New Orleans.

I think this is a great thing these people are doing. Helping out artist in need to get jobs in doing what they love. In the economy these days it is really hard to find a job with good pay that you actually like and a job where people can be home with there family rather than traveling.
